Train journeys come with their own charm. In the era of fast moving trains, the old rails fed on coal and steam can transit you in the fascination of slow-pace. One such example is the Toy Train in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh that runs from Kalka to Shimla. The Kalka-Shimla railway was built to connect the summer capital of the British rule – Shimla.

Popularly known as the Queen of Hills, Shimla is a place still untouched by fast-paced life. The snow-capped pine trees look gorgeous in the months of January while the rest of the year the deodar and pine forests pave the way to lush green landscapes. The huffs and puffs of the engine add it to the experience of a Technicolor view.

The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in India and is easily accessible by the common man to explore the panoramic views of this hill town that lies in the foothills of great Himalayas.

Here are 5 things you must know if you are keen on discovering Himachal via this gorgeous rail route:

1. The Toy Train takes around 5 to 6 hours from the Kalka Railway Station to its halt in Shimla. It makes for a great family time or a journey with friends, singing songs and sharing hearts while creating memories of a lifetime.

2. The 96 kilometer long rail route takes you through 103 tunnels that make the journey super fascinating. The Barog tunnel is the longest and it takes about 3 minutes to cross it.

3. The tickets for Kalka-Shimla Toy Train can be booked online one month in advance on the official portal of IRCTC. There’s a huge rush during peak holiday season.

4. A total of 5 trains run to and fro between the two stations. In summers, an extra special summer train is employed to tackle the heavy downpour of tourists.

5. The first train from Kalka leaves as early as 4AM while the last one to board from Shimla leaves at 6:15 PM in the evening.
