Anxiety is an exceedingly common disorder that causes a sudden spike of fear, worry, nervousness, panic and apprehension besides physical symptoms like increased blood pressure, sweating, trembling, nausea or irregular heartbeat. Approximately 10 million cases of Anxiety are reported every year in India, where majority of the population doesn’t even recognize, and many who do go untreatable.

What are the causes of Anxiety?

Anxiety can be a byproduct of stress at home, work, finances or relationships. It can also be attributed to your genes, brain chemistry, underlying medical conditions or withdrawal from substance or alcohol abuse.
Anxiety can result from a combination of these factors; however, people mainly resort to alcohol or substance abuse to calm themselves rather than sorting help.

How to handle Anxiety?

Anxiety levels can differ in individuals. While mild anxiety may just hamper your mental wellbeing temporarily, severe anxiety can hamper your day to day functions.

Anxiety is classified in six main types that include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Phobia, Social Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Separation Anxiety Disorder.

A person must identify his/her anxiety and ‘Name it to Tame it’. Identify your triggers that put you through bouts of anxiety and work towards minimizing them or taking control over these triggers.

Professional help or counseling must be sorted if you think you or someone you know is suffering from more than just Mild Anxiety rather than ignoring this condition.

Self-help techniques like mindfulness, meditation, deep breathing exercises, resting, yoga, exercising, talking openly to a loved one and practicing positivity must be leveraged to control anxiety.
