There’s a video going viral these days that dates back to the early days of Apple Inc. In the video, a young Steve Jobs explains why he considers Passion as one indispensable characteristic in his prospective employees. Jobs cites an example, in which he hired two seasoned professionals but soon fired them, because they didn’t know how to do a thing and just knew how to manage others.

As per Jobs, people who are passionate about what they do and are experts at what they do, are self-motivated, they are self-driven. They don’t need to work with people from whom they cannot learn anything. However, Jobs also points out that the company’s vision has to be shared with these passionate and expert employees and that’s where the leadership’s role starts. As per Steve Jobs, if employees know what the company’s vision is, then they can perform their tasks towards achieving that shared vision.

In the video, Steve Jobs shares, “We wanted people that were insanely great at what they did, but were not necessarily those seasoned professionals. But who had all at the tips of their fingers and in their passion the latest understanding of where technology was and what they could do with that technology.”

To replace those two seasoned professionals, Jobs gave the role to 32-year-old English Literature degree holder - Debi Coleman, who was inexperienced in Manufacturing, however, turned out to be a great risk that paid off well to Apple. The lady rose to the level of CFO of Apple Inc. by the age of 35.
