Shayani Ekadashi 2017 falls today i.e. July 4, 2017 and is observed as one of most pious fasts by the Hindu devotees of Shri Vitthal Rukmini – the avatars of Lord Brahma and Goddess Lakshmi. Shayani Ekadashi today also marks the beginning of Chaturmas as per the Hindu calendar. It is also known by the names of Ashadi Ekadashi or Maha Ekadashi or Devshayani Ekadashi.

As per the Hindu mythology, on Shayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu goes on a four-month-long slumber on Shesha Naag in the Ksheersagar Ocean and wakes up on Prabodhini Ekadashi (October 31, 2017). Shayani Ekadashi is considered as the first ekadashi thereby fasting on this day is considered to bring Lord Vishnu’s blessings for a happy, healthy and prosperous life.

Shayani Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Lord Vishnu narrated the importance of ekadashi to his son Narad on this day and later Lord Krishna described it to Yudhisthir (eldest amongst the five pandav brothers). As per the Bhavishya Purana, the Vrat Katha narrates the story of King Mandata whose kingdom was marred by a 3-years long drought. To please the rain gods and seek blessings from Lord Vishnu, the King observed the fast dedicatedly on this day. Lord Vishnu was pleased with the king’s devotion towards his kingdom and welfare of people. And finally the drought came to an end as rains quenched the thirst of King Mandata’s barren kingdom.

The Hindu Vaishanav’s who seek prosperity and happiness observe this fast religiously every year.
