Along with the rains that sauntered into Delhi on Wednesday, providing blessed relief from the sweltering heat, global ride-hailing service Uber promised to bring its consumers in the National Capital Region a “seamless food experience”, beginning with corporate hub, Gurugarm. The company announced the launch of the UberEATS app, which is different to the ride requesting app that has become a household name.

This is on the heels of the launch of the UberEATS app in Mumbai last month (its debut in India), giving the company, recently embattled with widely reported internal strife, some news to cheer about. In its first phase, UberEATS has tied up with 300 popular restaurants to deliver a diverse food delivery experience to its users. This portfolio will be diversified as the app increases its footprint around the capital region.

According to the company, this service will benefit both local restaurants and consumers, providing the former with a reliable delivery system which can expand their customer base while the latter enjoy the convenience of stuffing their faces with their favourite eatery’s food at home in pyjamas. This was naturally couched in more formal terms, but the fact is that UberEATS is part of a growing tribe of service providers which is offering convenience at the tap of a screen.

UberEATS first launched in 2014 as a small delivery service experiment in Los Angeles before released as a separate application in Toronto in December 2015. Since then, it has spread as a stand-alone app to 97 cities spread over 27 countries around the world. And while Delhi loves to eat, given its deplorable traffic conditions (especially) during the monsoons, it remains to be seen if the food delivery app has bitten of more than it can chew.
