Singer, rapper and songwriter Kesha Rose Sebert or Kesha, turns a year older today. The pop star, known for her quirky fashion, gained fame through her electro-pop songs and dance-pop performances. Following her debut, Kesha has evolved as a singer, with her recent works being more mature, personal and empowering. On her birthday we take a look at six of her influential songs.
TiK ToK (2009)
Kesha’s debut single, from her first album Animal, established her party girl image and reached the top of the charts following its release on August 7, 2009. It was written by Kesha, Benny Blanco, Dr. Luke and became the highest-selling digital single by a female singer.
We R Who We R (2010)
Kesha’s extended play (EP), Cannibal, was released as a companion mini-album to Animal. The lead single “We R Who We R,” written by Kesha, Joshua Coleman, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Lukasz Gottwald and Benjamin Levin, was a chart-topper. The song was written as a reaction against suicides amongst gay teenagers and urges people to embrace their individuality.
This lead single of Kesha’s third studio album, Rainbow, is about abuse, suicidal thoughts and healing. Fans and critics alike saw Praying as both a showcase of her vocal gifts and as a new beginning for the singer. The track opens with Kesha speaking of her suffering and seeking guidance from god. The music video also highlights the ills of consumerism.
Learn to Let Go (2017)
This is another incredibly spirited song about self-empowerment from the album Rainbow. Through the song, Kesha urges her listeners to let go of the memories of past negative experiences, bitterness and move ahead in life with positivity.
Kesha outdoes herself in this evocative song from her fourth album High Road. Through her moving lyrics and soul-stirring vocals, Kesha speaks of insecurities, hatred and the need to embrace joy and love.
Kesha collaborated with Dutch DJ and record producer Sam Feldt for this song. Once again, the inspiring lyrics urge listeners to brave the tribulations in life and fight for a positive future.
Happy birthday to pop star Kesha.
