Mindfulness: Don’t Shut Your Mind Just Like That

Roads might be closed, but sidetracks are always open. Most of the time we misunderstand the problem.

Mindfulness: Don’t Shut Your Mind Just Like That
Roads might be closed, but sidetracks are always open. Most of the time we misunderstand the problem.

One of the readers of Mindfulness, Mahesh Vishwakarma, writes from Jodhpur that he is not able to have sound sleep since some days. Worries don’t let his mind rest. Interestingly, Mahesh doesn’t have any problem right now. Actually he is apprehensive about his future.

Mahesh is worried due to the news he is getting from all over the world. Our minds work like a machine. Output is directly proportional to input. Our conscious mind pushes bad news towards the subconscious mind. Gradually they pile up and affect us.

A short story may help you to understand this. A king’s minister was about to retire. The king asked the minister to find his replacement. A competition and there remained ten candidates. The Minister called every candidate and said, “There will be the last important exam after one week. We want to check the awareness of your mind. The door will be locked. The person who will come out of the door will be the winner.”

All the candidates started to search for the information about locks and tricks to open them. Few collected various keys from the market as well to carry them secretly to the testing room.

Finally, all the candidates were locked in a room. None of the candidates slept that night, except one who didn’t go for any search. He just relaxed during the whole period. That night as well, he slept well. When everyone else was searching the ways to open the door, this person was just relaxing. The old minister was watching all this from a window.

When other candidates gave up, the calm young candidate got up and examined the room and door quietly. After that, he opens the latch of the door and got out of the room.

The minister happily welcomed the young man. Actually there was the lock but it was not needed to get out of the room. It was placed on the door in such a manner that it was easily possible to get out of the door without unlocking it.

Same is the condition with our mind. Roads may be closed, but sidetracks are always open. Most of the time we misunderstand the problem. That is why we need to make our mind calm, simple and kind.
