Touted as the most expensive film in the Indian cinema, 2.0 hits theatres today. Starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, the film is a sequel to 2010 blockbuster Robot.

Directed by Shankar, 2.0 also features Adil Hussain, Sudhanshu Pandey and Amy Jackson in key roles. AR Rahman has composed the music for the film.

The film has already established a benchmark for itself. The trailer of the film broke multiple records, garnering 25 million views in less than 24 hours. While the makers claim it to be a one-of-a-kind experience with its extravagant VFX, 2.0 is generating a sizeable amount of buzz among the audience as it also marks the Tamil debut of Bollywood star Akshay Kumar.

With a stellar cast and premium VFX, the film is likely to break multiple box office records. Talking about the opening of the film, trade analyst, Girish Johar predicts that the film is going to be the biggest non-holiday release of the year.

"The trailer of '2.0' has increased the expectations of the audience who have been waiting for the film’s release for a very long time. With a fantastic director like Shankar, I don’t think the movie will falter even after the first day. Movie buffs in the South will go berserk as superstar Rajinikanth plays the lead role in the movie,” Johar told

“The Hindi version of the film is expected to earn something between Rs 20-25 crore on the day of its release. If we consider all languages (Tamil and Telugu), the Rajinikanth starrer will touch Rs 100 crore (gross) mark on day one," he added.

At Rs 543 crore, this sequel to Rajinikanth’s 2010 blockbuster film Robot is more expensive than several successful Hollywood VFX classics. Deadpool (2016) had originally cost only USD 58 million. Even X-Men(2000) was made in USD 75 million and Batman (1989) in USD 35 million.

Earlier, Bollywood Hungama reported that the film has already recovered more than half of its production cost even before its release. It stated that the makers have pre-sold the digital and the satellite rights of all three versions of the film at a whopping amount of Rs. 370 crores.

Being released in 10,000 screens, 2.0 is tagged bigger than any Hollywood film or any film released on a single date ever. Taking a step ahead, the Madras High Court has directed 37 internet service providers (ISPs) to block over 12,000 websites that exhibit pirated versions of Tamil movies.

Will the film be able to break Thugs of Hindostan opening record? Will it live up to the hype? We'll find out soon.
