A lot has changed in the web series space in last one year. The medium has expanded and the potential audience is bombarded with options. But do you still know what to watch on streaming platforms?

Before the year ends, we have compiled a list of eight web series that ruled the internet in last twelve months. Even if you start now, it will take you the rest of the month to binge watch all of them.

So, here you go:

1. Sacred Games

Streaming platform: Netflix

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui

No. of episodes: 8

Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane’s Sacred Games made stars out of actors. It was a breakthrough series for the Indian audience. It revolves around Sartaj Singh, played by Saif Ali Khan, a troubled police officer in Mumbai who receives a phone call from Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Ganesh Gaitonde telling him to save the city within 25 days. Writer Varun Grover impressed the fans and critics alike with his gritty tale.

2. Sense8 Season 2

Streaming platform: Netflix

Cast: Aml Ameen, Doona Bae

No. of episodes: 12

Back in 2015, Sense8 brought the concept of Homo Sensorium which states that humans are mentally and emotionally linked. This year, Netflix hosted a two and half hour long season finale. In the second season, the psychic connection of eight strangers, who belong to different cultures and parts of the world, grows stronger and they become accustomed to these connections on daily basis. The sci-fi will get you hooked as a global attack is announced against sensates and their allies. With Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s powerful direction, there's no dull moment in it.

3. Better Life Foundation Season 2

Streaming platform: Hotstar

Cast: Sumukhi Suresh, Naveen Richard

No. of episodes: 6

The office-style spoof concerning a shambling Mumbai-based NGO brought to the forefront a more meaningful genre in web space world called ‘mockumentary’ (mock-documentary). The second season gets out of the existing stand-up comedy and takes a satirical plunge on toxic workplace culture, gender parity and hierarchical imbalance in an organisation. Naveen Richard, Sumukhi Suresh and Kanan Gill's on-point punches will leave you in splits as they go on narrating about the internal conflicts with 'no offence'.

4. The Romanoffs

Streaming platform: Amazon Prime

Cast: John Slattery, JJ Field

No. of episodes: 8

A one of its kind web series, The Romanoffs goes around people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family that was executed by a firing squad during the Russian Civil War near the end of the First World War. The series keeps you hooked with its large ensemble cast. Each episode turns out to be unique with a new cast and new scenario. Matthew Weiner's directorial will take you back to history you did not bother to read.

5. Yeh Meri Family

Streaming platform: TVF play

Cast: Vishesh Bansal, Mona Singh

No. of episodes: 7

A light-hearted drama comedy with high relatable content, it shows the world from the perspective of a 12-year-old boy. A nostalgic throwback to your pre-teen days, it presents Mona Singh and Akarsh Khurana as cool yet struggling parents. Its USP lies in the simplicity which will make you watch the entire season in one go and you won't even realise it.

6. McMafia

Streaming platform: Amazon Prime

Cast: James Norton, David Strathairn

No. of episodes: 8

The British crime drama inspired by the book of the same name is about Alex Godman, who has been trying to evade his family's past and live a normal life with a legitimate business. But in the process, he cannot skip the struggles he has on hand due to his family's former mafia connections. How he lands into the shadowy underworld and his fight for survival will keep you glued to the show till the very end. Also, Nawauddin Siddiqui haggling for more money is the best part of the show.

7. Side Hero

Streaming platform: Eros Now

Cast: Kunaal Roy Kapur, Sanjay Nath

No. of episodes: 8

Amidst all the glitz and glamour of a Bollywood film, we ignore the side hero. This web series revolves around Kunaal Roy Kapur, who is on the lookout for an ambitious project. His struggles as the 'other' character and his complicated life is a hilarious take on the difficult lives of supporting actors who want to make it big in the film industry. The scenes between his manager essayed by Gopal Dutt and Kunaal are laughter riot and one can enjoy the web series for a light-hearted time.

8. Altered Carbon

Streaming platform: Netflix

Cast: Joel Kinnaman, James Purefoy

No. of episodes: 10

Before you head to 2019, you can actually travel to 2384 where gadgets have taken over our lives. 360 years later, a person's memories and consciousness can be decanted in a device called a cortical stack which is implanted in the vertebrae at the back of the neck. The show brings a concept of theoretical immortality, but it is exclusive to Meths (the wealthiest). Science, conflict and intricacies of the murder fused together is what holds the show.
