There is no denying the fact that Aamir Khan's film Dangal has been making headlines for its stupendous success in India as well as China. The much-talked about 2016 release - which had reportedly earned Rs 2000 crore worldwide - has made just Rs 1864 crore so far.

If reports are anything to go by, Aamir's representative has confirmed that the biopic is yet to cross Rs 2000 crore worldwide.

"We have been reading a lot of reports saying that Dangal has crossed 2,000 crores worldwide. Just to set the record straight, we want to clarify that Dangal's official worldwide gross collection figure as of Thursday is 1,864 crore," said Aamir's spokesperson in a statement.

Even though Dangal crossing the coveted Rs 2000 cr mark is nothing more than a false alarm, the film continues to be lauded for multiple records it has managed to break. Recently, Forbes had referred to the film as the 5th highest-grossing Non-English movie ever.

"We are very happy that our film has been so successful, and what is of most value for Aamir Khan and the entire team of Dangal is the immense love the film has got from the audience across the globe. We are looking forward for the film to release in other untapped territories to reach more audience," Aamir's spokesperson said.

Dangal is the latest Aamir film which has also been lauded by Chinese President Xi Jinping who had told PM Modi that he 'loved' the film and wants to see more such movies released in China in the future.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal dealt with the idea of gender equality in the most convincing and intelligent way. For the uninitiated, the film featured Aamir in the role of wrestler and Olympic coach Mahavir Singh Phogat.

While its box office success explained the huge number of takers it received, the critical acclaim it earned spoke volumes about its content. For many, it was Aamir's unbelievable performance as a wrestler and also an overweight, ageing man that made it the best film of 2016.
