Mid Year Report Card: 5 of Bollywood's Best Surprise Performances So Far
From Dijit's tough cop act in 'Udta Punjab' to Pankaj Tripathi's nuanced performance in 'Nil Battey Sannata'; here's a list of actors without whom the successful films wouldn’t have been the same.

We’re halfway into what has been an amazing year for Bollywood’s acting package. While the lead actors have been in the forefront outshining the others, there were a few actors who cemented their acting credentials and won the audience’s heart despite not being the lead.

Be it romance, comedy or action; these actors represent the highest echelon of the acting talent of 2016. In the past six months, supporting actors have emerged as successful faces in carrying the film on their shoulders and are being lauded by the audience and critics alike. As we’re half way through the year, News18.com brings you the list of actors without whom the successful films wouldn’t have been the same.

Jim Sarbh, Neerja

Neerja-4

This man was barely seen in the trailers, promotions, songs or anything that was used to promote the biopic based on Neerja Bhanot’s life. Sarbh established himself as a prominent name after his portrayal of a terrorist in ‘Neerja’. His character of a terrifying mad terrorist on board, Khalil, made critics and audience take note of him. It was the unpredictability of his character which went ahead and caught the imagination of the audience. Considering the fact that the film revolves around the hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi and how Neerja fought for the lives of her passengers, it’s interesting to see a young actor hogging the limelight without hurting the lead’s role. He’ll be next seen in Konkona Sen-directorial debut ‘A Death In The Gunj’.

Pankaj Tripathi, Nil Battey Sannata

pankaj-1

‘Nil Battey Sannata’ not just carved its own niche with its story being the winner, but also impressed the critics for its star-cast. Known for portraying negative characters, Pankaj Tripathi has won laurels for films like ‘Agneepath’ and ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. This time, however, the actor pulled off a role of a school principal with utmost perfection. There were scenes in the film which would have slipped into a caricature if it were in the hands of a lesser actor. But Pankaj Tripathi took all that in his stride and played the role with pure nuance. From a witty dialogue delivery to a wry smile; everything about his role play wins you over.

Diljit Dosanjh, Udta Punjab

diljit

He’s already a big name because of his super-successful Punjabi songs. Considering the fact that ‘Udta Punjab’ featured actors like Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt apart from him, it’s commendable that not even for once did he get overshadowed by their on-screen presence. Diljit, as an honest tough cop, did full justice to the character and stayed true to his script for most part. His Punjabi dialect worked as a cherry on the cake! The actor will now be seen in Anushka Sharma- starrer ‘Phillauri’.

Sayani Gupta, Fan

sayani-1

Sayani Gupta came into limelight when her character Khanum from ‘Margarita With A Straw’ grabbed the eye-balls. Since then there has been no looking back for the actress. In ‘Fan’, she played a close aide to Shah Rukh Khan’s character Aaryan and managed to leave a mark even with her small screen time. Had it not been for Facebook, SRK’s secretary in the film would have been somebody else. The actress said she was contacted over Facebook by Yash Raj Films’ casting team after they failed to reach out to her over mobile phone. She’ll be next seen in ‘Jagga Jasoos’ and ‘Baar Baar Dekho’.

Anant Vidhaat, Sultan

sultan

Not everybody has the potential to get noticed in a film that is mostly revolving around Salman Khan’s wrestler character. If Salman is the reason for getting the big bucks at the box office, it is the supporting cast that makes it worth a watch with their fine and controlled performances. Anant Vidhaat plays the role of Sultan’s close aide, who happens to be a Haryanvi. From giving him the right advice to standing by him through the toughest time,Anant’s character Govind does it all in this film. Apart from his catchy dialogue delivery, his near-to-perfect Haryanvi accent was also something he should be acknowledged for.
