The year 2015 was the best time to be a fan of Southern cinema. On one hand, several established stars added a another dimension to their already storied careers while on the other the proverbial generation X too gave strong proof of its abilities and proved that the future is quite bright indeed. However, the 12-month long period will perhaps be best remembered as the year in which reel life heroes became a source of inspiration in real-life and helped a flood stricken Chennai return to normalcy.
Today, we take a look at the stars who created quite a buzz in 2015 and that too for all the right reasons.
Arvind Swamy: The popular actor made a triumphant return to the big screen following a short hiatus when he essayed a negative role in the action-thriller ‘Tani Oruvan’. Needless to say, his suave performance left the audiences spellbound and garnered tremendous critical acclaim. Moreover, ‘Thani Oruvan’ emerged a runaway hit on the commercial front, helping the 44 year old relaunch his career in the best way possible.
Nasser: The veteran character artiste defeated Sarathkumar in the keenly contested ‘Nadigar Sangam’ elections. As a result, he became the new president of the association, marking the beginning of a new era. Moreover, the actor also essayed pivotal roles in successful films like ‘Thani Oruvan’, ‘Bahubali’ and ‘Yevade Subramanyam’.
Rajinikanth: The resident ‘Thalaiva’ of Tamil cinema Rajinikanth became a grandfather for the third time when his younger daughter Soundarya Ashwin gave birth to a boy in May. Moreover, the superstar was also in the news a few days back when he told his fans to avoid celebrating his birthday in view of the flood that had brought life to a standstill in Chennai.
Kamal Haasan : The year 2015 proved to be one of mixed fortunes for Kamal Haasan. While films such as ‘Papanasam’ and ‘Thoongavaanam’ fared well at the box office, the much hyped ‘Uttama Villain’ proved to be a commercial failure Furthermore, the 61-year-old star also created a stir courtesy his caustic views on intolerance and the trend of returning awards as a mark of protest..
Siddharth: The ‘Rang De Basanti’ fame star collaborated with RJ Balaji and put together a team which helped in the rehabilitation of flood victims. On the professional front, his upcoming comedy ‘Jil Jung Juck’ too has created quite a buzz among movie buffs thanks to the quirky ‘Shoot the Kuruvi’ track.
SS Rajamouli: The filmmaker’s magnum opus ‘Bahubali’ finally arrived in theatres this year, bringing to a end a journey which had started nearly three years ago. Touted as an epic-drama, the film featured Prabhas and Rana Daggubati in the lead and opened to a thunderous response at the box office. Shot in Tamil and Telugu, it created a buzz courtesy its grand scale and flawless storytelling. Interestingly, its sequel is expected to arrive in theatres in 2016.
Dhanush: The 31-year–old National award winner began the year on a perfect note when his production venture ‘Kaaka Muttai’ emerged a big winner at the box office and earned some rather favourable reviews. Directed my newcomer Manikandan, it was shot a meager budget of Rs 1 crore. Moreover, ‘Maari’—which featured the actor in the titular role—too proved to be a commercial success.
Sridevi: The veteran actress created quite a stir among movie buffs courtesy her royal look in the fantasy-drama ‘Puli’. Also featuring Vijay and Sudeep in the lead, it saw the 51-year-old don the role of a cruel queen. Unfortunately, the film could not find much success at the ticket window. Furthermore, Sridevi also created a buzz in the industry when she recently gave former rival Jaya Prada a warm hug during the reception of the latter’s son.
Mani Ratnam: The celebated filmmaker gave strong proof of his abilities when the romantic drama ‘OK Kanmani’ proved to be a box office hit. Featuring Dulquer Salmaan in the lead, it was Mani’s first directorial venture in two years.
Chiranjeevi: The much loved megastar of Telugu cinema celebrated his 60th birthday and attended a bash organized by his son and noted actor Ram Charan. Moreover, he also made a comeback to the silver screen, essaying a pivotal role in ‘Bruce Lee’. Touted as an action-thriller it was his first big screen outing in eight years.
