Rajinikanth's 'Kabali' to Prabhas' 'Bahubali 2': Southern films to look forward to in 2016
Today we take a look at some of the most eagerly awaited films which are slated to hit screens in 2016.

As far as lovers of Southern cinema are concerned, the year 2015 was nothing short of absolute dream come true. On one hand several established as well as upcoming artistes gave strong proof their creative ability while on the other content-driven films too managed to taste commercial success and that too in a big way.

Interestingly, 2016 - which we ushered in just a few hours ago amidst much enthusiasm - promises to be equally as exciting as the year gone by. Moreover, it could also be one that is full of surprises and potential milestones. Today we take a look at some of the most eagerly awaited films which are slated to hit screens in 2016.

Kabali: In 2014, Rajinikanth suffered a setback when the much-hyped ‘Lingaa’ bombed at the box office. This year the veteran actor, who did not have any releases in 2015, will try to revive his fortunes with ‘Kabali’. Directed by Ranjith, it features him in the role of an ageing don.

Bahubali 2: Directed by SS Rajamouli and released in 2015, ‘Bahubali’ became a global phenomenon in the purest sense of the word courtesy its mesmerizing visual appeal and compelling screenplay. Shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, the epic drama featured Prabhas in the lead role. This year, its highly anticipated sequel is likely to arrive in theaters much to the delight of fans and casual viewers alike. While not much is known about the film at present, it is expected to be more emotional that the fist part.

Bhramotsavam: Being shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, ‘Brahmotsavam’ is touted as an intense drama and features Mahesh Babu in the lead. Interestingly, the film-- which is being directed by Srikanth Addala-- marks the filmmaker’s second collaboration with the actor. They had previously collaborated for the family-drama ‘Seethamma Vakitlo Srimalle Chettu’.

Theri: The year 2015 proved to be a highly forgettable one for Vijay as his only release ‘Puli’ opened to an underwhelming response at the box office. This year, the popular will hope to get his career back on track with ‘Theri’. Touted as an action-thriller, it will see him share screen space with Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson.

Vada Chennai: Highlighting the problems associated with life in North Chennai, the film brings together the celebrated the duo of Dhanush and Vetrimaaran. Their previous collaborations ‘Aadukalam’ and ‘Polladhavan’ had found tremendous commercial success, winning rave reviews along the way. Interestingly, ‘Aadukalam’ featured a mesmerizing performance from Dhanush and helped him bag a National award.

Puthiya Niyamam: In 2015, Nayanthara and Mammootty created quite a buzz among movie buffs courtesy their chemistry in ‘Bhaskar the Rascal’. This year, the two stars will be seen sharing screen space again in ‘Puthiya Niyamam’. Touted as a thriller, the film has been directed by AK Sajan . Needless to say, if ‘Puthiya Niyamam’ finds success at the box office, it could go a long way in establishing Mammootty and Nayanthara as one of the most sought after pairings of Southern cinema.

Pavada: ‘Pavada’, which went on floors last year, has already created quite a stir in the Malayalam film industry as it brings together two powerhouse performers namely Anoop Menon and Prithviraj. Directed by Marthandan, it will hit screen later this month.

Kotigobba 2: One of the most eagerly awaited Kannada movies of the year,‘Kotigooba 2’ is a sequel to the Vishnuvardhan starrer ‘Kotigobba’, Directed KS Ravikumar, it features Sudeep in the lead. Interestingly, ‘Kotigobba 2’ is being simultaneously shot in Tamil as ‘Mudinja Ivana Pudi'.

Interestingly, Kumar’s last directorial venture ‘Manam’ had emerged a winner at the box office. As such, it will be worth watching whether ‘24’ is able to help him continue his tryst with commercial success.
