Shahid Kapoor, Deepika Padukone Condemn Attack on Padmavati Set

The set of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film, Padmavati, was vandalised by unidentified persons in Kolhapur

Updated:March 16, 2017, 6:52 PM IST

Mumbai: Actor Shahid Kapoor says it is unfortunate that the set of his upcoming film Padmavati was

vandalised in Kolhapur district.

The set of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film, which also stars Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, was vandalised by unidentified persons at Mhasai Pathar in Kolhapur. Around 20 unidentified people torched the costumes and the animal feed kept there for the horses featuring in the period drama, the police said.

"I am aware there has been some disruption that happened, I am aware that a certain amount of costumes got burnt, I am aware everybody is safe and nobody got harmed. The shooting has wrapped up and the team is coming back," Shahid told reporters at an event here last night.

"What I am not aware of is who has done it. It is unfortunate that something like this has happened for the second time. As soon as there is some more clarity, the production house will respond to it. But no principal actors were there (when the incident happened)," he says.

Following the incident, the film's crew was provided police protection, Maharashtra's Minister of State for Home Deepak Kesarkar said yesterday.

In January this year, some members of Karni Sena, a Rajput community group, had attacked Bhansali and stalled the film's shooting at Jaigarh fort in Jaipur. Deepika Padukone too condemned the attack and rooted for director Bhansali and his vision.

In an interview given to CNN-News18, Deepika said, "Sanjay Leela Bhansali is someone who lives for cinema and I've never met anyone more passionate. I know for a fact that he will take everything in a positive way and pour it back into the movie. He's here to tell a story through his film and glorify Padmavati"

Deepika further added that the people protesting have no idea about the script of the film and thus their complaints are baseless.

"These complaints are attacks are childish and based on some tabloid news. Media should be mindful of these things. It's gossipy for them but look at the end result! People could've died."

Deepika will be essaying the role of Rani Padmini in Padmavati while Shahid will be seen has her husband Raja Ratan Singh. Ranveer Singh is playing the role of Alauddin Khilji, a Turkish ruler in falls for Padmini and wages war on Mewar to claim her.
