New Delhi: Top Malayalam actor Dileep, who was being questioned by the Kerala Police for alleged conspiracy in the abduction and sexual assault of a prominent actress, was arrested on Monday.

The arrest comes less than two weeks after the actor was extensively questioned by the police for alleged links with the main accused Sunil Kumar or "Pulsar Suni". Dileep's close friend and actor Nadirshah too was arrested.

Dileep has been claiming that Suni dropped his name in the case in a bid to blackmail him and that he was never in the know.

The popular south Indian actress was abducted and sexually assaulted in Ernakulam on February 17 while she was on her way back from a shooting location.

A group of men who stopped her car after a chase, sexually assaulted her in the moving vehicle for a couple of hours. They also allegedly took pictures and videos and blackmailed her before dropping her off by the roadside.

Six people, including 'Pulsar' Suni, were arrested in the case and police were investigating their links with the Malayalam film industry.

A recorded phone conversation and a letter written by Suni alleged that Dileep was in the know, but this was contested by the actor who said he was being blackmailed by the accused to pay up Rs 1.5 crore.

Dileep, who has played several lead roles acclaimed for their comic timing, was at one time a distant third to the big two of Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal and Mammootty. He has acted in over 130 films, with some of the slapstick comedies like Meesa Madhavan and CID Moosa going on to become big hits.

The high-profile case had rocked Mollywood, with all actors, including from the Hindi film industry, questioning the safety of women in the state.
