South Asians actors in Hollywood have often been mistaken for other actors, case in point being Deepika Padukone being addressed as Priyanka Chopra repeatedly in the United States. A similar incident happened again when actress Jameela Jamil was mistaken for Priyanka by a Twitter user. However, Jameela’s befitting reply got Priyanka’s support.
On Saturday, a Twitter user asked, “wait so did @nickjonas and @jameelajamil get divorced?" To this, Jameela wrote, “A different Indian woman who doesn’t look anything like me. @priyankachopra. I believe they are very happy together still."
Jameela’s classy response got Priyanka’s approval, who wrote, “Lol! @jameelajamil," with a heart, skeleton and punching emoji.
While speaking at an event in 2017, Priyanka had reacted to being mistaken for Deepika and vice versa. She had said, “That was unfair and a serious case of ignorance. It’s not right; every brown girl does not look the same. Indians constitute one-fifth of the world’s population and the representation of our prolific film industry in world cinema is our responsibility. We have to put ourselves out there.” Deepika also had a similar stance, saying that it was a racist act and everyone should be offended by it.
Jameela Jamil is a British actress known best for playing Tahani Al-Jamil in the Peabody-winning show The Good Place. She is currently a part of reality shows The Misery Index and Legendary. She also hosts a podcast called iWeigh, which is a part of her campaign for body-neutrality.
Priyanka Chopra on the other hand, will be next seen in Text For You with Sam Heughan and Celine Dion. She is currently shooting for The Russo Brothers’ Citadel with Richard Madden in London. On top of that, she will be a part of Lana Wachowski’s Matrix 4 starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss, Jada Pinket Smith and Neil Patrick Harris among others.
