Kolkata: Tollywood actor Vikram Chatterjee, 29, who was arrested in connection with the death of model Sonika Chauhan in a road accident, was granted conditional bail by the Alipore sessions court on Wednesday.
According to a source, Chatterjee was released after police failed to submit substantial evidence against him to prove that he was in an inebriated state at the time of the accident. The investigation officer also failed to prove that he was using his connections to be released on bail.
“He was asked to cooperate with the investigation officers and was also asked not to leave the city without informing the court. His passport was also seized,” a senior police officer said.
On July 7, Vikram was arrested by officers of Tollygunge police station near Acropolis Mall in Kasba, under the non-bailable section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC.
Sonika was killed in a car accident on April 29, while returning from a party along with Chatterjee.
Chatterjee, who was driving Toyota Corolla Altis under the influence of ‘alcohol’, sustained injuries during the accident. The actor, however, denied being drunk.
The actor turned BJP state general secretary, Locket Chatterjee, said, “Sonika and I were good friends. It is unfortunate that she is no more. I know Vikram too, but it is unfortunate that he is denying that he was drunk. He should come out with the truth and accept his mistake.”
Locket also alleged that some TMC leaders including Arup Biswas, PWD minister who won from Tollygunge seat, are trying to shield Vikram. “Everybody knows that Arup and his brother control the Tollywood film industry. They are trying to shield the actor and we want justice for Sonika. It is because of the pressure from TMC leaders that police are going slow in this case and Vikram was charged with minor cases so that he can get bail,” she had said.
Hours after Sonika's death, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien, however, expressed his condolences by uploading the model's photograph on his Twitter profile with a line, which read, “We all Love you Sonika.”
On May 5, Chatterjee was released on bail after he surrendered before a city court. The same day he held a press conference and claimed that he was not drunk - which ended up inviting severe criticism from Sonika's friends on social media claiming that he is hiding the truth.
Chatterjee has acted in several Bengali films including, Ami Aar Amar Girlfriends (Me and My Girlfriends), while Sonika was known for hosting Pro Kabaddi League and Big Boss Bangla.
