6 Bollywood musicians who have made an impact on Indie music in the country

Bollywood music has always pushed itself to try different styles but has always added its own spices and flavors to it. New styles have always found its market in Bollywood. Here is a list of some of the brilliant indie musicians who are often associated with Bollywood but are enjoying the best of both worlds.


Papon, a multi-instrumentalist, a producer, composer and one of the most powerful voices of Indian Indie and Bollywood music industry. He is an extremely versatile artist who is trying to revive and archive the traditional folk music alive. Papon has 6 Assamese albums to his name and has come out with his first Hindi album, ‘The Story So Far’ recently. His composition ‘Jiyen Kyun’, ‘Kaun Mera’ and ‘Naina Lagey’ has got him a remarkable success in Bollywood.

Vishal Dadlani

Vishal Dadlani, a self-made musician renowned for his eclectic taste in music and his presence in Indie music scene in India. While his band - Pentagram has been into hardcore, Dadlani has managed to serenade his fans with love songs as ‘Vishal-Shekhar’ duo, which is one of the reasons for his fans and followers to enjoy his music even more. Vishal Dadlani does manage to surprise us with a lot of things, his foray into film music has thus made him taste the best of both worlds.

Sneha Khanwalkar

You might have first caught her mapping the breadth of the country to collect different sounds for her refreshing program Sound Trippin’. Sneha Khanwalker had spent more than a decade experimenting with sounds, music and teaching herself how to compose using different softwares. Her first mainstream album was ‘Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye!’ which had captured a typical Haryana vibe and her contribution to Gangs of Wasseypur’s music is commendable.

Kailash Kher

Who doesn’t know the voice behind Teri Deewani and numerous other compositions which have left their mark on music industry permanently? Much like a magician, Kailash Kher has been able to captivate the hearts of millions with his melodious voice. His music touched spiritual notes with ‘Allah Ke Bande’ and made his followers fall deeper in love with his melodious track,‘Teri Deewani’. Kailash Kher has carried within himself, a Bollywood spirit as well as paved his musical journey through his band Kailasa.

Shankar Mahadevan

Enthralling, melodious, spell-binding are some of the adjectives that will come to our mind when we talk about the music maestro- Shankar Mahadevan. The musician is not just another big name in the music industry but he also has a distinct identity as an independent artist. His much respected music compositions from ‘Breathless’ to his contributions in ‘Bhag Milka Bhag’ are cherished in hearts of his fans and music lovers.

Rabbi Shergill

Rabbi Shergill exploded on the Indian alternative pop scene with “Bulla ki Jana” in 2005 and moved the music industry with the powerful words of spiritualist Bulleh Shah. He is amongst the musicians who had shown different music identities starting with a Sufi/ Sikh to a narrator of social injustice through his music. One of the great musicians in Bollywood and a highly respected Indie artist- ‘Rabbi Shergill’ is a perfect fit to this category.
