New Delhi: Her voice was unconventional and that's perhaps the reason why Nazia Hassan's song 'Disco Deewane' became such an instant hit when it released in 1981. Although she didn't sing too many songs in Hindi films, Hassan is still remembered for her unique style and also for introducing western tunes and DISCO to the entire South Asia.

On her 13th death anniversary, we list out 10 facts about the singer that you may have not heard before.

She started singing at a very young age. Was part of several TV shows as a child artist.

Nazia was all of fifteen when she did the playback for Zeenat Aman in 'Qurbani'. The song 'Aap Jaisa Koi' became a chartbuster almost instantly.

Nazia's father Basir Hassan was a Karachi based businessman and her mother Munizeh Basir was a well known social worker.

Nazia was a lawyer by education. And also held a degree in Business Administration and Economics at the Richmond American University in London.

Nazia was the first Pakistani to win a Filmfare Award and remains the youngest winner of a Filmfare Award in the category of Best Female Playback Singer to date. She won the award when she was 15 years old.

After the enormous success of 'Aap Jaisa Koi', Nazia collaborated with musician Biddu and released her first private music album thus becoming the first playback singer to release an album in India and Pakistan.

Both Nazia and her brother Zohaib Hassan worked together in the first album 'Disco Deewane'. They both were offered to star in feature films but refused as they wanted to concentrate on their music career.

In 1991, Nazia and her brother Zoheb recorded her fifth album, 'Camera Camera'. Before the album's release, Nazia and Zoheb announced during a launching ceremony that it would be their last album.

In 1991,Nazia joined the Department of Political and Security Council Affairs at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and worked there for two years.

Known for supporting various causes, Nazia created an organization called BAN (Battle against Narcotics) in Karachi to help fight the drugs war. She and her brother Zoheb dedicated their album 'Camera Camera' to BAN and hoped to create drug abuse awareness among the Pakistani youths.
