The Sports Ministry's flagship Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) has received a further setback with 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Abhinav Bindra resigning from the elite athletes identification committee.
CNN-IBN has been reporting the failure of the TOP scheme to provide timely funding to India's medal hopefuls over the last one week. Infact reacting to CNN-IBN's expose on 2013 Khel Ratna Ronjan Sodhi being denied funding Bindra had said government schemes should be athlete friendly and that they should not be burdened by paperwork.
Bindra tweeted his resignation letter a short while back citing paucity of time. Bindra said he is busy preparing for the Olympics which are ten months away and he could not meaningfully contribute towards making the scheme a success.
Due to paucity of time(the Olympic Games are 10 months away)I will not be able to make a meaningful contribution as a member to the TOPs 1/3— Abhinav Bindra (@Abhinav_Bindra) October 29, 2015
I don't feel it right to continue as a member.Hence I have resigned from the committee a few minutes ago. 2/3— Abhinav Bindra (@Abhinav_Bindra) October 29, 2015
