Most sportspersons invest in sporting or fitness ventures post retirement

A sportsperson's retirement is always on the cards once he or she is within touching distance of 40. It may not hold true for sports like chess and shooting, which require more mental strength than physical, but is certainly the case with most other sporting disciplines.

A sportsperson's retirement is always on the cards once he or she is within touching distance of 40. It may not hold true for sports like chess and shooting, which require more mental strength than physical, but is certainly the case with most other sporting disciplines.

Indian cricket has seen many big names bidding the sport good bye over the last two years. Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar have all passed the baton to the next generation, and the most recent to hang up their boots have been Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan.

So is the case with India's most famous football icon Baichung Bhutia.

All these names need no introduction and have ample to do even post retirement. But what's common is that each of them have invested at one place or the other as part of their post-retirement plans. Let's take a look.

Sachin Tendulkar (retired November 2013)

The batting legend joined the list of famous owners of sports team when he bought the Kerala franchise of the Indian Super League (ISL). The team was named Kerala Blasters.

Sourav Ganguly (retired October 2008)

One of India's most successful captains, Ganguly was the first to join the ISL bandwagon of celebrity team owners by partnering the likes of Harshavardhan Neotia, Sanjiv Goenka, Utsav Parekh, and Spanish La Liga side Atletico de Madrid to co-own the Atletico de Kolkata franchise that won the inaugural season of the league.

Baichung Bhutia (retired August 2011)

Bhutia founded the Baichung Bhutia Football Schools in October 2010 in partnership with football by Carlos Queiroz and Nike. Ten months later in August 2011, the Indian football icon quit international football.

Zaheer Khan (retired October 2015)

India's most successful left-arm fast bowler owns a company called 'ProSport' that offers fitness training and physiotherapy services. Also part of the company are Team India's former physiotherapist Andrew Leipus and fitness trainer Adrian Leroux.

The thought of retirement from a fulfilling career is always a difficult decision. It requires a lot of planning and effort to chart a second life. However, with helpful options such as the HDFC Life Click 2 Retire plan and inspiration from lives of people around us, it is definitely something every young professional should think about.
