New Delhi: Ace India gymnast Dipa Karmakar became the toast of the nation after coming excruciatingly close to a medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Dipa’s feat was celebrated by the entire nation and she was gifted a BMW car along with medal winners PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik.
But the 23-year old has decided to return the car to its original owner V Chamundeswaranath, president of the Hyderabad Badminton Association.
Dipa’s coach Bisweshwar Nandi spoke to News18 and elaborated on the reasons behind the decision.
"There are a couple of reasons behind this. First, there is no service centre in Agartala. People drive Maruti, Honda or Hyundai here. BMW has a lower base and roads in Agartala are not perfect for driving BMW", Nandi told News18 over phone.
He also mentioned that there are no drivers in Agartala who can drive a luxury car like BMW.
“Dipa doesn't know driving. And, for driving BMW, you need to have a driver to who can drive a car like BMW. No one is here who can drive such a big and luxury car", he said.
The gymnast has now requested that an amount equivalent to the cost of the car be given to her, so that she can utilize the same per her own wish.
Dipa attained the 4th position in Women's Vault Gymnastics event of Rio Olympics 2016 with an overall score of 15.066.
