Effective Ways to Protect Kids from Winter Flu and Infections
Here are some top tips that you can follow to up your child’s immunity, keep them comfortable and protect them against nasty illness bugs that make the rounds.

Though they provide respite from the heat and rain, the colder months of the year can be a bane for parents as illnesses such as the flu and infections are rife. Keeping kids well in the winter requires extra precaution and care - and a little going a long way in having healthy and happy children. As the cold weather approaches, here are some top tips that you can follow to up your child’s immunity, keep them comfortable and protect them against nasty illness bugs that make the rounds.

Humidify Your Home

Dry months, particularly during the winter, can exacerbate allergies, cause skin breakouts and increase your child’s susceptibility to common cold and flu. A good way to combat this is to humidify your home. You can do this naturally through a number of ways, including adding houseplants, leaving the door open while showering and drying clothes indoors.

Wash Hands Regularly

Flu germs are everywhere in the winter: door handles, staircase railings, elevator buttons - you name it, the chances are someone ill with the flu virus has touched it. To avoid being infected by these germs from contact to these everyday objects, get your children into the habit of washing their hands regularly and thoroughly with soap, especially when they come back from outside and before eating.

Get Timely Immunisation

Getting a flu shot yearly is one of the most effective ways to stay protected against the seasonal disease. The flu vaccine is updated each year to include protection against new strains of the virus that are being passed around. Children six months or older should get a flu vaccine every year.

Keep Children Home When Ill

If your child is ill, it is recommended that they stay home, even if it’s an important day at school. Medical practitioners also advise that kids rejoin school only if they’ve gone a full 24 hours without fever or vomiting.

Cough Into Your Elbow

Until a few years ago, doctors would recommend covering the mouth while

Coughing. However, they have now realised that germs and viruses can also spread easily through touch. The answer? Cough into your elbow.

Discourage Food & Drink Sharing

An obvious one, but worth remembering every once in a while. Viruses can easily spread from one infected person to a healthy person if the two share food or drinks. Discourage your kids from sharing their food or eating other kids’ tiffin boxes - or teach them how they can do so without increasing their susceptibility to germs.
