Presidential Elections: Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu Meet Sonia Gandhi

Union ministers Rajnath Singh and M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi to discuss the Presidential poll as part of the ruling BJP's outreach to stitch a consensus on the official nominee.

New Delhi: To build a consensus on the candidate for the Presidential elections, Union ministers Rajnath Singh and M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Singh and Naidu arrived at Gandhi's 10 Janpath residence to help evolve an agreement on the crucial elections scheduled for Saturday.

The meeting lasted for 30 minutes. However, it was not immediately known as to what transpired there.

Senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mallikarjun Kharge were also present in the meeting, seen as the first major BJP outreach to the opposition on the Presidential polls, PTI reported.

Attacking the BJP, Azad said: “There is no question of consensus on the issue as BJP has not mentioned any name, instead they tried asking us the same.”

The meeting comes barely two days after a sub-group of opposition leaders constituted by Gandhi met in Azad's Parliament chamber to discuss the opposition strategy. The meeting had decided to wait for the government proposal on the matter before taking a further view.

BJP chief Amit Shah had appointed a three-member panel comprising Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh and Venkaiah Naidu to hold talks for a possible consensus in electing the next President began its work.
