Kolkata: The West Bengal Government on Wednesday decided to audit the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) to ascertain the actual cost of development projects executed under its chief Bimal Gurung.

A government source said, "The auditors have reportedly found some gross misuse of funds. It was also found that a large number of construction, sanitation items were bought on higher prices – which could be avoided."

He said, "In some cases fake bills were believed to be placed while in some areas bills were generated without any work. It is a gargantuan task and will take some time because apart from normal audit - now the 12 team of auditors were also engaged in physical audit," he added.

Party insiders said, the government strategy is to look for some concrete evidence against key Gorkha Janshakti Morcha leaders including Gurung towards possible siphoning of GTA funds for personal benefits.

"We want to expose Bimal Gurung and other trouble makers on corruption charges. Preliminary GTA audit hinted towards a possible misuse of funds. Things will be clear soon," he said.

Meanwhile, Congress and Left Front have decided to boycott Thursday's all-party meeting called by the state government to ensure peace in the Hills. Both the parties said that there is no point in attending the meeting in absence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Speaking to News18, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said, "The state government is trying to suppress our demand for a separate Gorkhaland. They have barred Internet access in the Hills and also threatened local news channel not to telecast anything which could flare up the situation in Darjeeling. We want Centre to intervene for an immediate solution to the problem."

"Communication is an essential service and not a luxury. We would appeal to all the mobile operators in Darjeeling and Kalimpong region to ensure uninterrupted Internet service and mobile Internet service immediately," he said.

On June 5, Banerjee reached Darjeeling and announced GTA election will be held in July. Then, she alleged that GJM leaders are trying to hide their failure (misuse of funds) and therefore they are indulging in rioting and arson. Same day, she announced a special audit of the funds given to GTA and warned no one will be spared.

On June 6, Gurung threatened to resign after Banerjee announced 'special audit' and warned to intensify movement in the hills. Sensing trouble, Banerjee announced that Bangla is not compulsory for the people living in the Hills.
