New Delhi: Narendra Modi has stamped his authority on the new Union Cabinet by not bowing before the allies and also giving important portfolios to leaders who are likely to deliver the results quickly. He has broken the conventional experiments of ministerial quota being dependent on how many MPs an ally has. Despite winning many more seats than the Lok Janshakti Party, Telugu Desam Party and Shiv Sena are on the same page as the Ram Vilas Paswan-led LJP.

In another major departure from the past, there is no space for dynasties. No sons or daughters of prominent politicians have been included in the Union Council of Ministers. Poonam Mahajan (daughter of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan), Jayant Sinha (son of senior party leader Yashwant Sinha), Dushyant Singh (son of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje) and Abhishek Singh (Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh's son) have been ignored.

Modi has gone for people in whom he has total faith. So young leaders like Smriti Irani and Nirmala Seetharaman are likely to get important portfolios.

He has also tried to position himself as a person who believes in women's empowerment. So he has made Anandiben Patel the Chief Minister of Gujarat while several woman leaders like Sushma Swaraj, Smriti Irani and Nirmala Seetharaman are being inducted into the Cabinet. Another senior woman leader Sumitra Mahajan is the frontrunner to be the Lok Sabha Speaker as well.
