RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has already upped the ante, daring the JD (U) chief Nitish Kumar to declare fresh election and seek a fresh mandate. In Bihar, we had received record-breaking mandate against the BJP. Now, Nitish will run the government with the same BJP on "moral grounds", writes Lalu.

After resigning from the post of chief minister, Nitish Kumar has a big challenge at his hands; to keep his own party united as a few leaders have been critical of his intention to join hands with BJP. Bijendra Yadav, MLA and commerce minister in the Nitish cabinet, warned Nitish against going with the BJP and said, "Nitish ji, people of Bihar have elected you and Lalu both. Any attempt to scuttle the alliance would have serious repercussions."

Even on Wednesday, just before Nitish was to meet his legislatures, one of the MLA Poonam Devi, who is from Yadav community, openly said that he would defend Tejashwi in the meeting.

Like Bijendra and Poonam, 18 out of 71 JD(U)'s  MLAs are  Muslims or Yadavs, a constituency always supporting Lalu Prasad.

Since the Bihar BJP chief has already declared his support to Nitish Kumar, the question is will the swearing-in ceremony take place tonight?

Jul 26, 2017 9:19 pm (IST)

Sources have told CNN-News18 that all BJP and JD(U) MLAs are headed to the Raj Bhawan in Bihar. The governor may announce the new coalition in power anytime.  Nitish Kumar is likely to meet the Governor again to stake claim to the government.

Jul 26, 2017 9:15 pm (IST)

Bihar BJP Chief Sushil Modi said that he has communicated to Nitish Kumar via telephone that he will support him. "We have decided to support the Nitish-led government and we will convey our message to the Governor of Bihar as soon as possible."

"We have told him that we accept him as our leader and he is ready for it," Sushil said, adding, "we will support the government formed under him."

I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his tweet supporting my decision, tweets Nitish Kumar.

Now that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has quit from his post, will Lalu Prasad stake claim to the Bihar government? Lalu, in his press conference, said that it was Nitish who left the Mahagathbandhan, and the grand alliance is still there. The RJd, JD(U) and Congress MLAs should take a call on the next Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.

Dark clouds had been looming large over the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar for quite some time. The two leaders, Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav, were arch rivals in Bihar before they put their differences aside in a battle fixated on curtailing BJP's remarkable run, riding on  Modi wave, in national politics. Congress had repeatedly tried to diffuse the fire, but even the 125-year-old party couldn't help as the Mahagathbandhan come down crashing.

Lalu Prasad Yadav has set the ball rolling for the next government in Bihar, saying the RJD, JD (U) and Congress MLAs should take a call on the next Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.

Lalu has also alluded to a case in which corruption charges were levelled against Nitish Kumar. He asks: "How come Nitish is sitting in Chief Minister's chair now." Lalu said that Nitish is facing charges under "arms act". When we asked him if he was open to joining hands with BJP, his answer was no.

"There was no need for Tejashwi's resignation as CBI action was politically motivated and orchestrated by BJP central leadership," he said. Lalu even showed some papers, alleging Nitish Kumar was facing a murder case dated August 31, 2009.

Jul 26, 2017 7:55 pm (IST)

Reacting to Nitish Kumar's resignation, Lalu Prasad said that if Nitish is citing corruption allegations as the reason for his resignation, then he must remember that when we entered the alliance in 2015, corruption charges against me were already there. Nitish has always maintained that he will die but won't join hands with the BJP. We spoke last night for forty minutes. He never asked for Tejashwi's resignation. "I don't feel the need for any explanation to Janata Dal (United) leaders," he said.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar 's meeting with Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi comes after RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav again ruled out the resignation of his son Tejashwi from the post of deputy chief minister and maintained that all is well in the Bihar Mahagathbandhan.

Sources are telling CNN-News18 that RJD supremo Lalu Prasad is likely to hold a press conference and react to Bihar Chief Minister's resignation. Lalu had on Wednesday morning made clear that his son Tejashwi, who is also the deputy CM of Bihar, was not going resign, despite Nitish's repeated demand for the same.

In June 2013,  Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had formally announced his departure from the National Democratic Alliance, ending a 17-year-old political relationship.  Nitish Kumar had repeatedly made his opposition to the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's candidature for the Prime Ministerial post.

Fast forward to 2017, Nitish's decision has been welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Nitish had announced his support for PM Modi's demonetisation drive and even supported NDA's Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind, to Opposition's chagrin.
