Months after breaking her 16-year-long fast, and deciding to fight the system through a democratic exercise, the 'Iron Lady' Irom Sharmila cast her vote on Saturday morning in Manipur.

Speaking to CNN-News18, Sharmila said that twenty years later, she feels responsible after voting, and added that she has "already cleaned the system to an extent". "Our fight is against money and muscle power. Whether we win or not, cleaning of the system has already begun".

Confident of her party People’s Resurgence and Justice Alliance's (PRJA) victory, Sharmila said that she was "hopeful of a win against the sitting Manipur CM Okram Ibobi Singh".

When asked if the limited funding that her party was able to get was enough to contest elections, she smilingly said "yes".

"A lot of people wanted to contest this election, but they didn't live up to my level of cleanliness in politics," she said. she also said that she reduced the number of candidates from 20 to 3 because most of "those, who approached her, didn't match the standard of integrity".

Irom Sharmila is contesting from Thoubal constituency in Manipur.
