With it appearing that the Congress is set to form the government in Chhattisgarh, the next question for the party is its chief ministerial candidate. Here are the four options ahead of the party.

Bhupesh Baghel

President of the state PCC and an MLA from Patan. He became the Deputy Leader of Opposition from 2003 to 2008, before becoming PCC chief in 2014. He has served as minister in the government of Digvijaya Singh when Chhattisgarh was part of Madhya Pradesh, and later in Ajit Jogi’s cabinet too. Baghel rose to prominence after the entire state unit was wiped out in a Maoist attack in 2013.

TS Singh Deo

An erstwhile royal, Deo is among the richest candidates in these elections and is the present Leader of Opposition. Often criticized within the party of "going soft" on Raman Singh on certain issues, he is among the prime contenders.

Tamradhwaj Sahu

Sahu is the lone Congress MP from Chhattisgarh, representing Durg constituency. He has become significant in the Assembly polls, with the OBC community switching over to the Congress. He is the chief of the Congress’ state OBC unit. He is considered close to Rahul Gandhi.

Charan Das Mahant

He is contesting polls from Sakti and was formerly the CM of MP. He has been a Union minister in the UPA cabinet and was the party president in 2008, when the BJP-led by Raman Singh defeated the Congress to form government.
