New Delhi: Mincing no words, senior Congress leader Manish Tewari on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reigned in an era of politics of victimhood by repeatedly saying that he was a tea seller and had risen from the lower strata of society.
"Take Charan Singh, Manmohan Singh and IK Gujral. Aren't they from a regular family? It's a good thing that Modi has risen to the position that he is in through grit and hard-work but he should not say that he is the only one who has done it. He's not the only one," Tewari said.
Commenting on the Congress leadership, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the party had never even considered former PM Manmohan Singh as their leader because the party's leaders only came from "one family".
Naqvi took a dig at the probability of a third front for 2019 saying there was no leader in the forefront. Taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi, Naqvi said that the "the person on the driving seat of the gathbandhan does not have a driving licence."
Commenting on the recently concluded elections, Naqvi said the only reason 2019 had become about Rahul Gandhi was because Congress had won three elections. "State elections are not a referendum on the Lok Sabha elections. Every election has a different issue, a different mood and a different situation," Naqvi further said, adding that the alliance, if it came through was leaderless unlike BJP's leadership which was crystal clear—Narendra Modi.
Tewari, however, said that the elections next year would not be driven by a personality but by "democratic traditions of our country."
