Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma hailed the selection of Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu as next chief minister of Himachal Pradesh saying he was grateful that the party leadership has taken a “democratic decision” and chosen one who has risen through the ranks.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new Government in Himachal will be attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, leader Rahul Gandhi and AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, announced MP and senior leader K C Venugopal. The Congress picked Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu as the next Himachal Pradesh chief minister and Mukesh Agnihotri as his deputy.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was chosen as the 15th chief minister of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, a mark of his dedication to the Congress for 40 years now. Himachal Pradesh congress unit president Pratibha Singh said she welcomes the Congress high command’s decision after the party named Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu as the new Chief Minister of the hill state and the Deputy Chief Minister position to Mukesh Agnihotri. “I congratulate Sukhu Saheb and Mukesh Agnihotri ji,” she said.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who was named the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, after a Congress Legislative Party meeting, thanked the party high command after the announcement. “I thank the high command for giving me this opportunity… We will fulfil our promises.” He further said, “People have given us a clear mandate… Give us some time and we will take some decisions which will be beneficial for every one. Decisions will be taken after consulting youngsters and all Himachalis.”

While Himachal Congress campaign committee chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is all set to be announced as the next chief minister of the hill state, slogannering for state unit president Pratibha Singh by her supporters have continued despite her withdrawal from the race for the top post. Supporters of Pratibha Singh’s camp raised slogans of “Holy Lodge ke vaaste, Khali kar do raaste,” “high command hosh mein aao”, “nahi chalegi nahi chalegi….tana shahi nahi chalegi…hosh mein aao.”

Speaking on the suspense behind who will become Himachal Pradesh Chief Minsiter, Chhattisgarh minister TS Singh Deo told News18 that state unit president Pratibha Singh and wife of late chief minister Virbhadra Singh has withdrawn her candidature for CM Post. “Now the names have to be decided between Leader of Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Agnihotri is a loyalist of the family of Virbhadra Singh,” he said.

The new Himachal Pradesh chief minister is likely to take oath on Sunday, Congress sources told PTI. Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, head of the election campaign committee, is all set to become the new Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh according to sources. An official announcement will be made shortly.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting has been delayed as some MLAs including state unit president Pratibha Singh are yet to arrive. Himachal Congress campaign committee chief and likely Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is inside the premises.

Himachal Congress campaign committee chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s name for Chief Minister position was decided after consultations with party national president Mallikarjun Kharge who talked to members of the Gandhi family.
