Kolkata: The West Bengal police have lodged an FIR against 40 people including Gorkha Janamukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung and his wife Asha in connection with the killings of three GJM supporters.
Investigation revealed that the GJM supporters were not killed in police firing – as alleged by the pro-Gorkhaland supporters.
"We have found that all of them were killed after GJM agitators opened fire during protests on June 17. They were killed in a GJM firing, not police firing," a senior police officer said.
"We have lodged a murder case against 22 people, including Bimal Gurung, his wife Asha, Jyoti Rai and Vinay Tamang," he said, while adding that Bimal and his wife are absconding.
Hours after the FIR, GJM announced that Bimal, Asha, along with 40 others leaders, are going to resign from the GTA. They will send their resignation to the CMO on June 24.
Today, in the all-party meeting – which was boycotted by Congress, Left Front, BJP – the state government issued a warning asking GJM to withdraw the strike immediately as this is badly affecting the people living in the Hills.
"We don't want bloodshed in the Hills. We want peace and it should be restored immediately. Nothing is going to be achieved through violence and therefore we would like to request those who are behind strike should come for talk for the betterment of Hills," Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee said.
Meanwhile, Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has written a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, urging him to intervene as crisis in the Darjeeling Hills is also affecting the economy of Sikkim. He said that several students studying in Darjeeling are facing a harrowing time due to the bandh.
Earlier, on June 18 – a day after the killings - GJM leaders found themselves in the backfoot after Singh appealed to those demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland to maintain peace in the Hills.
The statement issued by the MHA stunned the GJM leaders (keeping them in dark about the communiqué) as many of them felt that instead of issuing a press statement – Singh should have communicated with them directly.
