Chandigarh: Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Sunday evening submitted his resignation following Congress's massive loss in the Assembly elections. A few hours after it became clear that Bharatiya Janata Party would be forming the next government in the state after 10 years of Congress rule, Hooda reached Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh to quit.

After resigning as Haryana CM Hooda said, "I have submitted my resignation to the Governor, but the Governor has asked me to continue taking care of the affiars till the new government takes oath."

BJP secured a clear majority winning 47 out of 90 assembly seats. The Congress was reduced to just 15 seats while Om Prakash Chautala's Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and its allies managed to win 21 seats leaving two seats to HJC and six to others.

Earlier on Sunday the outgoing Haryana chief minister expressed his gratitude to Sonia Gandhi for giving him the support to develop Haryana and urged the new government to maintain the pace of the development.
