The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), headed by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, on Thursday declared candidates for the posts of mayors and chairpersons wherein a large number of posts will be held by women for the first time. Of the 86 posts of mayors and chairpersons, 52 are women.
In another first, the Reddy-led party allocated 50 per cent of roles in temple boards and agricultural marketing committees to members belonging to scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, backward class and minorities, while another 50 per cent posts have been given to women.
Besides, around 78 per cent of the posts in councils have also been allotted to backward communities (SC/ST/BC/minorities).
In a landslide of unprecedented scale that is now being described as ‘Jagan Wash’, the ruling YSRCP on Sunday swept the elections to the urban local bodies, and literally buried the main opposition Telugu Desam Party in 75 municipalities and 11 municipal corporations.
