Dr Somendra Tomar of BJP has defeated Haji Mohammad Yaqub of BSP and won the Meerut South seat.

The main candidates from Meerut were Haji Mohammad Yaqub (BJP), Haji Mohammad Yaqub (BSP), Mohammad Azad Saifi (INC) and Pappu Gurjar (RLD)

Bharatiya Janata Party fielded Somendra Tomar, a Gujjar, who is facing Bahujan Samaj Party’s, Yakub Qureshi. If Bharatiya Janata Party is hoping for a polarisation of votes, Bahujan Samaj Party is banking on the Dalit-Muslim combine. RLD who fielded Pappu Gujjar is counting on the jat-Gujjar vote bank.

The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) defeated the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the 2012 Assembly elections. Ravindra Bhadana, the winning BJP candidate, got 71584 votes. The nearest contender was Haji Rashid Akhlaq of BSP who got 61,800 votes.

The ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh had in 2012 won 224 seats spread across 75 districts. It has tied-up with Congress this time in the contest against BJP and BSP.

Elections to 403 seats of Uttar Pradesh were held over 7 phases from February 4 to March 8.

Exit polls had predicted the BJP emerging first in Uttar Pradesh with the Samajwadi Party- Congress alliance emerging second and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party emerging a distant third.
