Meghalaya: Journalist 'brutally assaulted' by MLA

The MLA was upset after a newspaper published a photo taken by the journalist showing him sleeping in the Assembly.

Shillong: A Congress MLA in Meghalaya allegedly brutally assaulted a journalist in the state Assembly on Monday. The photo journalist Walton Lytan is reportedly seriously injured, after he was beaten up by the MLA Founder Strong Cajee in the Assembly corridor.

Cajee was upset after a local newspaper published a photo taken by Lytan showing him sleeping while the Assembly proceedings were on.

Opposition leader Conrad Sangma visited him at the Shillong Civil Hospital.

Terming the incident as "unfortunate" Sangma said, "It is unbecoming of an elected representative to behave in this manner and that too within the premises of the Assembly".

"We will be taking up this matter and ensure that the Speaker takes action against the erring legislator," he said.

While an FIR has been lodged with the police, the Opposition has assured the aggrieved media persons here that the matter will be raised on the floor of the House on Tuesday.
