New Delhi: On a day when top ministers in the government started formal consultations with the opposition on Presidential elections, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat met President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday afternoon.

Bhagwat, who was in the national capital for a day, drove to Rashtrapati Bhavan from the RSS office in central Delhi. The President met Bhagwat over lunch for over an hour.

"Nothing political should be read into the meeting between the two. It was merely a courtesy call with the President,” said a senior RSS leader who confirmed that the meeting was scheduled in advance.

This is not the first time the RSS leaders have met the President.

The development comes on a day when Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Venkaiah Naidu met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury to arrive at a consensus for Presidential polls.

The RSS, which is the ideological fount of the ruling BJP, has so far maintained a studied silence on the matter. But its influence on decision-making in the BJP on key issues is often out of the media glare.

RSS swayamsewaks have occupied all top constitutional positions in the country, including that of the PM, Vice-President and Lok Sabha Speaker. However, no swayamsewak has been the head of state.
