Hyderabad: YSR Congress Party chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy launched a full-blown attack on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu in front of huge grounds at the SPG grounds on Thursday as he kick-started what is likely to be a heated political campaign for the by-poll in Nandyal.
The by-election has become a prestige battle for both the ruling Telugu Desam Party and main opposition, YSRCP. The election, which is scheduled for August 23, will not only set the tone for assembly election in 2019, but is also being seen as a referendum for TDP's rule. Both parties are leaving no stone unturned to win.
Calling the election a war between ‘Dharma’ and ‘Adharma’, between right and wrong, Reddy said it would mark the beginning of Chandrababu Naidu government’s downfall.
“The battle for Nandyal is a fight for righteousness and we are on the right path while Naidu has been misusing official status and state machinery, but all that will be in vain," he said.
"The Chief Minister had blatantly engineered defections and had taken away 21 of our MLAs shamelessly. This by-election should teach him a fitting lesson for his nefarious deeds,” Jagan said.
The YSRCP chief exhorted people to give a big mandate to the party in the by-election and take a revenge on Naidu for not fulfilling his promises.
“A jittery TDP is now showering sops after sops on Nandyal. All the ministers, MPs, MLAs, leaders are trying to woo the voters of Nandyal. Even Naidu is coming here with false promises. But the poll will be people's verdict against the misrule and corruption of Chandrababu Naidu,” he added.
In his speech, Jagan also assured the public that he would take up the complete responsibility of developing Nandyal town. He promised to declare Nandyal a new district and transform it into a model town. YSRCP has hired well-known poll strategist Prashant Kishore for 2019 elections and this election will be the first test for him to take party to victory.
