Lucknow: Days after BSP won the two mayoral seats of Meerut and Aligarh, the Meerut mayor overturned an erstwhile order that asked all employees to sing Vande Mataram before municipal corporation meetings.

The Bahujan Samaj Party winning the two mayoral seats in the recent municipal elections was definitely a booster shot for the party and now the newly-elected Meerut mayor, Sunita Verma toppled the ex-Mayor’s decision that made singing Vande Mataram at municipal corporation meetings a must.

“As per the constitution of the municipal board, our National Anthem ‘Jan Gan Man’ will be sung before board meetings and not ‘Vande Mataram’,” said Mayor Sunita Verma.

The decision by BSP’s newly elected mayor was met with some opposition, however, Verma did not seem to be bothered about it.

Dissenting on the decision to stop singing ‘Vande Mataram’ before board meetings, BJP leader Karunesh Nandan Garg said, “We will protest against this decision in and outside the municipal corporation. If the mayor tries to dictate terms then our municipal councillor will go on the roads and sing Vande Mataram in protest.”

In Meerut, where the mayor’s seat was reserved for an SC woman candidate, BSP’s Sunita Verma defeated BJP candidate and state party vice-president Kanta Kardam in a close contest.

The newly elected mayor of Meerut, Sunita Verma is the wife of former BSP MLA Yogesh Verma. While she received 2.34 lakh votes, Kardam got 2.05 lakh votes.
