The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till noon amid the opposition's uproar over demands for a privilege motion against some media houses for publishing expunged remarks of Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agrawal.

RECAP | Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar retorted by claiming that mob violence must be condemned but it should not be done selectively'."When I condemn mob lynching, I do not suffer from selective amnesia like some of our opposition colleagues," said Javadekar. "In 1984, Sikhs were lynched or burnt alive, at least 3,000 of them. In 2002, Ram 'bhakts' (devotees) returning from Ayodhya were lynched in Godhra. We condemn all such incidents," the HRD Minister said. He said there were 16 mob lynchings in 2012 and 14 in 2013

RECAP | In Rajya Sabha, the opposition accused the government of creating an atmosphere of fear in the country, the government in its reply said there was nothing anti-Muslim or anti-Dalit about the incidents, but cow vigilantism should not be "eulogised". Speaking on the issue, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "doublespeak" and giving "gau rakshaks" (cow vigilantes) a free hand.

RECAP | The House was earlier in the day during Question Hour as the opposition members continued their sloganeering. The House was first briefly adjourned for 20 minutes till 11:30 am and then 12 noon. Soon after the House met for the second time, the Congress-led Opposition stood up and started shouting slogans.

RECAP | After a washout of the Question Hour, the opposition met at 12 noon on Thursday. After speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected all the notices of adjournment, the angry opposition leaders trooped near the Speaker's podium and started sloganeering against the NDA government. Amid the din, papers were laid and some reports were tabled. Mahajan then adjourned the House for the day expressing anguish over the behaviour of opposition members.

RECAP | On Day 4 of the Monsoon Session in the Parliament, the Lok Sabha passed the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Bill, 2017. The Bill declares 15 existing Indian Institutes of Information Technology established through public-private partnership as institutions of national importance.

Day 5 of the monsoon session and the ruling NDA government is being given a tough time by the opposition. On three of the four days till now, both houses have had to be adjourned due to protests. The first day of the monsoon session was adjourned due to the death of sitting members of both the Houses.
