New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi and PM Narendra Modi, both of whom are in Rajasthan campaigning for their respective parties, locked horns over a slogan that praises the motherland: ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’.

The BJP leaders are known to end their speeches with this in almost all the rallies.

While campaigning in Alwar's Malakhera town this morning, Rahul Gandhi said the PM is never short of hailing the motherland before every election speech even though he is working for the interests of the industrialists.

“PM Modi says 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' before every speech, he should instead say 'Anil Ambani ki jai, Mehul Choksi ki jai, Nirav Modi ki jai, Lalit Modi ki jai'. If you talk of Bharat Mata then how can you forget our farmers?” said Rahul.

Rahul further alleged that the PM waived off debts of 15 people to the tune of three lakh crore but not a single farmer in Jhunjhunu has been spared a rupee.

PM Modi, who was in Sikar, reacted sharply to the attack by the Congress president asking how can he be stopped from chanting ‘Bharat mata ki jai’.

“The Congress has come up with a "fatwa" that I should not begin rallies with ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. How can they deny this? They must be ashamed of even saying such a thing. This shows their disrespect for our motherland,” said PM Modi.

Last week BJP president Amit Shah claimed that the Congress leaders are ashamed of saying ‘Bharat mata ki jai’.

"I happened to know an incident from Rajasthan where a Congress worker wanted to give the slogan 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', but he was interrupted and made to say 'Sonia Gandhi Ki Jai'," Shah claimed.
