Bhopal: A day ahead of party president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Mandsaur, Congress put up a mega show of strength on ground by staging a massive protest against spike in petrol-diesel prices in Bhopal on Tuesday.

Interestingly, despite repeated claims of unity ahead of assembly polls, opposition Congress was unable to take to the streets of Madhya Pradesh to corner the BJP government.

It was also an occasion where state president Kamal Nath and Campaign Committee chairman Jyotiraditya Scindia came together after PCC vested key responsibilities in them.

Enthusiastic Congress workers in huge numbers turned out in the protest giving some anxious moments to the ruling party.

Defying the blistering heat, both the senior leaders accompanied by hundreds of party workers and leaders had taken out the rally from PCC office on bullock carts and addressed party workers at several places on their way to CM's House. The procession halted before it could reach the destination and black balloons were flown to mark their protest.

The administration had deployed heavy police force in the wake of the protest and roads leading towards CM House were heavily barricaded. Police detained hundreds of party workers but released them later.

Earlier, throwing an open challenge to CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Scindia ahead of the protest rally told the media that he was ready for a debate on development with Chouhan "at a place and time of his choice".

“The BJP is apprehensive of Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Mandsaur and is conniving to render it as a failed event,” Scindia said.

He stated that crude oil prices are falling in international market but the BJP government has failed to slash petrol-diesel prices in India.

“Those raja-maharaja’ and corporate people who seldom travel by road are merely having a photo session on bullock carts. These people have nothing to do with the hassles of the poor and only come to MP for political tourism during elections,” BJP spokesperson Rajnish Agrawal said.
