Kolkata: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday and sought a report on the Baduria communal tension in Bengal’s North 24-Paraganas district.

During the conversation, Mamata expressed her displeasure over Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi’s ‘behaviour’ towards her and demanded that the Centre take a serious note of the issue.

Mamata complained that the Governor should not take the side of any political party as he is holding a constitutional post.

Mamata told Rajnath that she had never been as humiliated as the way she felt after talking to the Governor. She further alleged that a few religious leaders of both the Muslim and Hindu communities were behind the clash and assured adequate action against them.

In reply, Rajnath asked her to submit a detailed report on the incident and also promised all kinds of assistance in ensuring peace in the area – despite law and order being a state subject.

Earlier in the day, Rajnath also had a word with Governor Tripathi to gain insight on the clashes. “They had a detailed discussion about the present situation in the area," sources said while adding that Rajnath also asked him about his alleged war of words with the CM.

Tension flared up in Baduria after a class XII student posted an objectionable comment on Facebook. Soon after the incident, the local police arrested the youth but a large number of people from a certain community demanded that the student should be handed over to them.

Situations worsened after the police refused to hand him over.

On Tuesday, hundreds of villagers went on a rampage – damaged houses, looted shops and torched several vehicles.

The situation is currently under control after a large number of para-military forces were rushed into the area to maintain law and order. Internet connectivity was barred in and around Baduria to prevent people from uploading objectionable images which could flare the issue further.
