Chennai: Over the last ten days, speculations were rife that late Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalaithaa's closest aide Sasikala could be the General Secretary of the AIADMK.
Top ministers, including Chief minister O Panneerselvam, met Sasikala at the Poes Garden residence of the late CM to discuss the future of AIADMK.
On Saturday, top Ministers urged Sasikala to be the party chief and lead the AIADMK as though J Jayalalithaa was leading it.
Chief Minister O Paneerselvam even issued a statement saying that Sasikala should be the one to take Jaya's place as the General Secretary.
C.Ponnaiyan, AIADMK Spokesperson on Thursday spoke to reporters outside MGR memorial confirming that Sasikala will be the party General Secretary.
"It is clear that Chinnamma (Sasikala) will be the next Gen Secy of the party. It is the desire of entire party that Chinnamma should become GS. Chinnamma has functioned as the conscience of Amma. Gen Body and Working Committee Of party will be meeting soon over the issue. Chinnamma has played a part in the glory attained by Amma," Ponnaiyan said.
Jayalalithaa had occupied the General Secretary post for the past 27 years. Till now, it was always the Chief Minister who held the party General Secretary post in the AIADMK.
For the first time, we have O.Panneerselvam being the Chief Minister and Sasikala holding the General Secretary post. Will there be a dual power center within the party?
R.K Radhakrishnan, Political Observer, said, "Sasikala has been running the party for more than a year now and hence there is no dual power center as of now. There is only power center and that is Sasikala.
Chief Minister O.Paneerselvam is just one of the many ministers with a CM designation. What happens from now will be very interesting because with time and with Chief Minister having a lot of resources at his control can become his own person.
