Bhopal: Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan kept his future plans shrouded in mystery as he announced that he was not in the contention for the post of leader of opposition in the state assembly.

“I am not in the race for the post of LoP. Who will fill the post will be decided by the party,” Chouhan said on Friday. I would continue to remain a leader, he said.

“I don’t need any post and I have specified this in the past,” said the former CM while speaking to News18.

He yet again hinted that the Congress government would be shaky as it does not have absolute majority and had to rely on outside support in MP, but added that the BJP would only return to power in the state once it has absolute majority.

The BJP has an emotional connect with the public, quipped the senior politician who has remained active and conducted public meets after he tendered his resignation as the CM after three terms.

In a veiled threat to the Congress government, Chouhan made it clear the BJP would offer vehement opposition if developmental and welfare measures were stalled. Raring to settle scores with the Congress, Chouhan said they would return to square one in four months.

Ever since Chouhan stepped down last month, it was widely believed that he could be appointed the Leader of Opposition in MP assembly. Earlier, the three-time CM Chouhan had also declined the possibility of him shifting base to New Delhi.

The BJP has entrusted the responsibility of electing LoP to home minister Rajnath Singh and state in charge Vinay Sahastrabuddhe. The BJP legislature party will meet in Bhopal on January 6 after which an announcement is expected.

Outgoing Speaker Dr Sitasharan Sharma and senior MLA Gopal Bhargav are frontrunners for the post. The inaugural assembly session gets underway on January 7.
