New Delhi: Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind, BJP’s nominee for Presidential elections, was born on October 1, 1945 in Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh.

He is BCom graduate and is an LLB from Kanpur University, Uttar Pradesh.

Kovind married Savita Kovind on May 30, 1974 and has two children, a son Prashant Kumar and a daughter Swati.

Ram Nath Kovind who is

Kovind was a Central Government Advocate in the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and a Central Government Standing Counsel in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.

He became the Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court in 1978 and practised in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for about 16 years till 1993. He was enrolled as an advocate in 1971 with the Bar Council of Delhi.

Kovind became a Rajya Sabha MP in April 1994 from Uttar Pradesh and served for two consecutive terms for 12 years till March 2006.

He has served as a member in many important Parliamentary committees, including those on welfare of scheduled castes/tribes, home affairs, petroleum and natural gas, social justice and empowerment and law and justice. He was also chairman of Rajya Sabha House Committee.

Kovind served as member of the board of management of BR Ambedkar University, Lucknow. He also served as member of board of governors of Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata. Kovind represented India in United Nations (New York) and addressed the UN General Assembly in October, 2002.​

Kovind was general secretary of the UP BJP during the 2014 elections where he closely worked with party chief Amit Shah. Sources told News18 that his comfortable relationship with PM Narendra Modi was one of the prime reasons why Kovind was made Bihar governor before the elections. Since his appointment, despite doubts raised by chief minister Nitish Kumar, there have been no reports of any discord between the CM and Kovind.

His colleagues at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Foundation, where he was chairman and trustee, say that the NDA's presidential pick had sagacity in approaching issues and had support from people across various age groups. "He has a deep sense of the Constitution and is not flamboyant at all," said Anirban Ganguly, director of the institute.
