New Delhi: Within months of Narendra Modi moving in into Prime Minister’s residence in Delhi, his most trusted aide was the party president. And once again, just three months after another emphatic victory - in UP assembly polls - Amit Shah has well and truly made that final transition to national politics.

BJP, with its current strength in the state Assembly, is assured of two out of three Rajya Sabha seats up for grab in the biennial elections slated next month. Party Central Election Committee on Wednesday nominated Shah and Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani for the two vacancies in Gujarat.

This will be the first time Shah would be contesting an election for Parliament. For more than two decades now he’s been representing Sarkhej Assembly segment in Ahmedabad.

After the Lok Sabha victory, Prime Minister praised Shah as the architect of the triumph scripted in UP. Shah was the general secretary in-charge of the state where BJP, along with its allies, secured more than 90% seats.

In the last three years, there have been a couple of blips in Shah’s presidency. Delhi loss to Arvind Kejriwal was the first one. The second in Bihar was the major reversal Modi-Shah combine duo had to endure. With Nitish’s ghar-wapsi, the last credible challenge to NDA before 2019 has been dealt a body blow.

Shah’s nomination to contest RS polls also firmly puts a lid on recurring stories in the media about his return to state politics. In Vijay Rupani, he’s got a man of his own choice as the state Chief Minister.

The current dispensation has been successful in installing their hand-picked people to lead the government in BJP ruled states - from Haryana to Maharashtra it’s a long list.

After UP polls, Shah has taken up one of the most ambitious expansion plans for the party organisation. The idea is to expand party’s footprint to areas where BJP has been traditionally weak.

Under Shah, BJP is a party in election mode - 24x7.

Politically speaking, in three years, Shah has disrupted the pecking order to recreate the Modi-Shah binary of Gandhinagar here at the Centre.
