Indian ace shooter Jitu Rai staged a remarkable comeback to win the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup on Tuesday.

The Army man shot a total of 216.7 in the eight-man final to finish third on the podium at the Dr. Karni Shooting Range in New Delhi.

"Honestly, I didn't expect this kind of final. I was at the bottom in the final due to some bad shots. But I promised myself that I have to fight till the end. I was determined and positive. I took one shot at a time and finally it paid off," Jitu Rai said after winning the bronze medal.

Japan's Tomoyuki Matsuda won the gold medal with a world record total of 240.1 points, while Vietnam's Xuan Vinh Hoang claimed silver with 236.6 points.

The Asian Games silver-medallist was languishing at the seventh position after the end of the first series with a shot of 8.8. But the 29-year-old shooter clawed his way back with two 10.6 and a 10 in the second competition series. At the end of that series, Rai was placed sixth with a total of 98.7.

"I never look at score screen. It can be a distraction so I avoid that. I kept my calm and did my job. Today I made mistakes and quickly learnt from those," Jitu said.

Jitu was the part of Indian shooting contingent for the 2016 Rio Olympics. He represented country in 10m and 50m air pistols event, where he finished 8th and 12th, respectively.

"It was my third international tournament after the Rio Olympics. Just after Rio, I won silver medal at the World Cup Final in Bologna," Jitu said.

The other Indian shooters in the fray in the air pistol event -- Omkar Singh and Amanpreet Singh -- failed to cross the qualification stage
