SEATTLE: The Seattle Sounders are bringing back Australian defender Brad Smith after signing the left back to a new contract Thursday.

Smith spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons with Seattle on loan from English club Bournemouth and had eight assists in 35 appearances for the Sounders while helping to solidify their back line. Smith returned to England after Seattle won the MLS Cup last season and completed his contract while on loan to Cardiff City.

With Brad being out of contract, this was a uniquely good deal for us, allowing the club to add a high impact player during this unorthodox season,” Seattle general manager Garth Lagerwey said.

Smith, 26, originally arrived in Seattle midway through the 2018 season. He made five Premier League appearances during his time at Bournemouth and has 22 appearances for Australia in international play.

Seattle currently has three more MLS matches scheduled over the next couple of weeks, beginning Friday against LAFC. It’s unclear when Smith will be cleared to stat participating in training or games.

He is a good guy to have in the locker room and already has established relationships with players on our team. Im looking forward to bringing him back into the squad, coach Brian Schmetzer said.
