Facebook has announced that select users in India can now create Reels on the platform. The social media giant had first introduced Reels, its own version of short videos, on Instagram last year, days after the Indian government announced a ban on TikTok. Additionally, Facebook is also testing the ability to share Instagram Reels on Facebook in a dedicated ‘Reels and Short Video’ section. Both options to create Reels and Share Reels on Facebook are available with select creators.
The option to share and create Instagram Reels on Facebook is currently available with public figures such as chef Sanjeev Kapoor and Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina. Select professional creators such as Pooja Dhingra, Ashish Chanchlani, Masterchef Pankaj Bhadouria, Awez Darbar, and Bong Guy also have the latest option. As expected, the mass rollout will take place after the testing done with these select users. In a company statement, Facebook states to create a short video on the platform, users will need to select the Reels button at the top of the Facebook News Feed. Here, they can either create a short video or upload it from the Gallery. Additionally, users will also get built-in tools to trim or edit multiple clips. Facebook users can also choose audio from the library, add AR Effects, and manage the video speed of the Reel.
In case Instagram creators want their Reel to appear on Facebook, there’s a dedicated prompt on the platform that needs to be enabled (or allow). Facebook explains, “If the creator opts-in to the experience, their reel can be shown as recommended content to anyone on Facebook based on what may be relevant to them. Their reels will be shown with their Instagram username, not from their Facebook account if they have one.”
Whereas, Reels created on Facebook can be shared on Newsfeed. The Facebook Reels can be shared with ‘Friends,’ ‘Public,’ or a custom audience.
